Three steps. Five minutes.

1

Your business and your truck

Business name, EIN, address, VIN, gross weight, and the month the truck first hit the road this tax year. That's the whole form.

2

We figure the tax

The IRS rate depends on weight and first-use month. We calculate it and show you the number before you decide anything.

3

Print it or e-file it

Download the PDF and mail it free, or choose e-file and we transmit it. Either way you get a stamped Schedule 1. E-file gets it to you in minutes.

Who has to file

Any truck with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more that uses public highways. If your rig has plates, you file.

Owner-operator red big rig

Owner-operators

One truck, one EIN, once a year. Most people on this page. Takes five minutes.

Small fleet of trucks parked

Small fleets

File every VIN on one return. Add trucks mid-year as you buy them. Fleet plans cover unlimited filings.

Farm truck

Farm and logging trucks

Under 7,500 miles a year (5,000 for everyone else) means you file but pay nothing. We handle the suspended-vehicle box.

When it's due

The tax year runs July 1 to June 30. If your truck was on the road in July, you file by August 31. Buy a truck later in the year and your deadline is the last day of the following month.

If the date lands on a weekend or federal holiday, it moves to the next business day.

What it costs to file late

4.5%
of the tax owed, per month you're late, for up to five months
0.5%
more per month if you also haven't paid, plus interest
No plates
The DMV won't register or renew a truck without a stamped Schedule 1. That's the real penalty.

Example

One 80,000 lb truck owes $550 for the year. File it four months late and the IRS adds about $99 in failure-to-file penalty, $11 in failure-to-pay, and interest. Roughly $660 instead of $550, and your plates were held up the whole time.

Filing now stops the penalty clock. Even late, filing is better than not filing.

Two things to remember
Our fee is for the e-filing. The tax itself goes straight to the IRS, whichever way you file.
Filing 2290 doesn't register your truck. The DMV still needs the stamped Schedule 1. That's why you file first.

What the stamped Schedule 1 is

Schedule 1 is the second page of Form 2290. It lists your VINs. When the IRS accepts your return, they stamp it (a watermark if you e-file) and that stamped copy is your proof of payment. Your state DMV asks for it before they'll give you plates or renew your registration. Keep a copy in the cab; DOT officers ask for it too.

The stamp is the whole point of the form. Everything on this site is built to get it into your hands.

Questions people ask us

Is the free version actually free?

Yes. You fill out the form, we generate the PDF with everything filled in, and you print it and mail it to the IRS with your payment. We don't charge for that. We make money when people choose to e-file because they need the stamp fast.

Why would I pay to e-file if I can mail it free?

Time. Paper filing takes the IRS about six weeks to stamp and mail back. If plates are due or you're at the DMV, you can't wait six weeks. E-file gets the stamped Schedule 1 to you in minutes.

Can I use my Social Security number instead of an EIN?

No. The IRS requires an EIN on Form 2290. If you don't have one, you can get one free from the IRS online, but a brand-new EIN takes about two weeks to work in the e-file system. We'll show you how.

I typed my VIN wrong. Now what?

File a VIN correction. It's free here, whether you mailed your original or e-filed it. You'll get a corrected Schedule 1.

My truck is under 5,000 miles a year. Do I still file?

Yes, but you owe nothing. You file as a suspended vehicle. Farm and logging trucks get 7,500 miles. We handle the suspended box for you and it's free either way.

How do I pay the actual tax?

If you e-file: bank withdrawal, EFTPS, or credit or debit card. If you mail it: check or money order with the voucher we print for you. Our fee is for e-filing only; the tax goes straight to the IRS.

I sold my truck. Can I get money back?

Yes. If you're filing another truck, the credit goes on line 5 of the new 2290 and comes off what you owe. If not, we prepare Form 8849 Schedule 6 free and the IRS mails you a check. How it works.

Do you speak Spanish?

Yes. The whole site is in Spanish at 2290expert.com/es, and help is answered in both languages.

Chris M., Tennessee

Needed my 2290 to get my tags taken care of and didn't want to mess around with IRS paperwork. The whole thing was pretty straightforward. I paid to e-file and had the stamped Schedule 1 right away.

I've used a couple different 2290 sites over the years. This one was easier to follow and I liked that I could fill everything out for free before deciding if I wanted to print and mail it or pay to e-file.

Kevin S., Pennsylvania

Pretty simple process. Entered my truck information, reviewed the form and everything made sense. I could have printed and mailed it for free, but I needed it done, so I paid to e-file.

I had a question while I was filling everything out and used the chat. Got the answer I needed and finished the filing without a bunch of back and forth. Good service.

I've been an owner operator for 18 years and the paperwork side of trucking never gets any more fun. I usually put the 2290 off because I don't want to deal with it. This was probably the easiest I've done it. The questions actually made sense, I could see everything before paying, and I chose to e-file so I could get it taken care of right away.

David W., Oklahoma

Bought another truck and needed the Schedule 1 before I could finish up the registration. Found this site and figured I'd give it a shot. No confusing tax language and no hunting around trying to figure out which form I needed. I filled everything out, paid to e-file and had what I needed without making another trip.

We have six trucks and I handle most of the paperwork myself. With multiple VINs, the 2290 can turn into a pain pretty quickly if the site isn't set up well. I was able to enter all of our trucks, review everything in one place and file without any problems. Much quicker than the service I used last year. I'll use it again when our next filings come up.
